Sirius vs. XM

howard siriusxm

The two examples I selected for my final project are ads from Sirius and XM satellite radio. I chose these ads because I am a broadcast major and I am highly interested in Satellite Radio.

The first image I chose is from an XM ad that was taken from the world famous online hip hop store, hiphopsite.com.  The reason why I chose this ad is because most XM ads that I have came across try to target the older audience by using Oprah Winfrey name/image.  I wanted to exploit a different side of XM and show that XM offers more than just Oprah even though she is their highest paid employee.  This XM Ad features two African American men, one a DJ and one is an emcee trying to promote XM Channel 65 The Rhyme; an all hip hop channel.

The next image that I selected was from the satellite radio provider that I am currently subscribed to, Sirius.  Satellite radio has never been so big until this one man took the throne.  That one man is the King of All Media, Mr. Howard Stern.  This image was an ad found in a January edition of Maxim and can also be found on Sirius.com and/or howardstern.com.  In this photo it has Howard with a Sirius microphone ready to probe the next victim was his wild antics and mature/immature humor.  The reason why I chose this image is because Howard Stern is the most dominant man in Satellite Radio and possibly in radio history.

In the XM ad featuring the two young African American men, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Rasta Root, both are posing for their hip hop channel, The Rhyme in order to give promotion to the diverse music offered on XM.  When I first viewed this image my personal reaction was that this is an obvious hip hop channel for XM.  With the two young black men, one with a bandana and the other with his arms cross it makes the two seem a bit reserved but at the same time it seems that they really want to speak out.  There is also another black male in the lower right corner with just a head shot exposing his New York Yankees ball cap.  This mans name is Jay Force and he is the host of this channel.  When I first saw him it also reinforced the whole hip hop design because of the way his hat is resting.  The cap is worn correctly in front however it is worn too low; nearly covering his eyes which makes me aware that this man is involved with the hip hop lifestyle.  I know what to expect personally from the radio channel just after viewing this single image.

Historically this image brings out the fact that these people were once under-spoken and even repressed because that’s what history brought forth.  The whole hip hop community consists of mainly African Americans and slavery along with oppression is apart of black history.  Both of these men look as if they are to be taken seriously about what they have to say.  Instead of flashy hip hop clothes and bling these two are simply wearing black shirts, possibly just to resemble their pride in black culture.

The technicality of this image consists of a directional light coming in from the right side causing some hard shadows of the characters body.  These shadows are attached bringing out the form and texture of the object being lit.  There is a hard beam of light on both of the characters left side of their face. This is complete high key lighting coming from the right side of the picture.  This picture also contains slow and minimal fall off because the light intensity is in uniform with a gradual change from light to dark and this slow fall off also hides the wrinkles. The light used would be an incident light because you do not see the source of the light and the eyes do appear to be a bit glossy so I do see some reflection of light from their eyes.  The depth of field in this image is at good average eye level shot distance from camera to object leaving plenty of space and head room.  The photo is also shot at a horizontal angle which leaves the viewer to see more tranquility and peace rather than excitement and energetic.  The use of colors in this image is almost black and less black.  It seems as if they did not want any vibrant colors to throw the viewer off and they wanted to stick to what they know best, black.

In terms of this picture being ethical I believe that it fits precisely with its target market audience.  The station is called, “The Rhyme” and it is an all hip hop channel.  Everybody knows that hip hop is predominantly black music with predominantly black artist.  However there are plenty of different ethnicities that enjoy rap/hip hop, but the ad would not be nearly as effective if there were an Asian and or white guys in image.  The message would not be clear nor understood however by placing to black men into the image the message is clear, direct and straightforward that this is an all hip hop channel.

Culturally this picture fits in well.  Hip hop is not just known domestically here in the states; it is now international music being heard in countries all over the world.  Yet for our culture it does fit somewhat well.  Even though I don’t listen to much rap/hip hop at all I believe that most people my age do listen to that music, especially the black culture.  The critical terms of this photo is that it is trying to address the average hip hop junkie to tune in and listen to XM Channel 65, The Rhyme.

In the Sirius Satellite Radio ad Howard Stern is shown with a Sirius microphone and his iconic long black hair.  This ad was originally released shortly after Howard Stern first joined the Sirius family and has continued to be one of their most frequently used and popular ads to this day.  When I first saw this ad my personal reaction was that Howard wants to probe his next victim with his microphone and by using his savvy interviewing skills along with his adult/childish behavior.  To be honest when I first saw it I actually laughed because they are making Howard Stern to appear as if he was some radio Zeus which he really is. Howard Stern is the King of All Media and in my opinion the best broadcaster/interviewer of all time.  I also couldn’t help to notice the Sirius microphone which makes this ad brilliant in my opinion.  With Howard’s eyes demanding attention and the Sirius microphone in his hand, the man looks like a ruler of his own world.

Historically this image represents Howard Stern’s reign as Radio Emperor and what he will bring to Sirius Satellite Radio.  Howard Stern has ruled the radio game for the past 30 years with his innovating, creative and man-style technique and now Sirius wants to be apart of history as well.  The photo features a legendary man holding the future of sound from the sky.  Howard Stern is already historic and legendary, Sirius is the future and together they are history in the making.  Howard also looks like a matador holding his sword (in this case it’s the mic) and it even seems as if he is about to thrust the sword in order to put on a show for his audience.  With his sharp and bold looking eyes, serious-mannered expression and his Sirius microphone Howard looks like he means business.

The technical features of this picture consist of a hard precise directional light with a flood/scoop light and a white background.  With the light illuminating his face you can see his jaw line and complete outline of his face.  They did a well job hiding the wrinkles on his neck and it is obvious that there is no falloff at all here because the lighting is perfectly even and the intensity of light is in correct uniform.  There was possibly an umbrella used as well by the photographer to be used as a fill light.  I don’t see many shadows except for minor cast shadow caused by the Sirius microphone.  The depth of field is at close eye level with the camera near the object.  There is no space between the top of the head and the top of the frame leaving no headroom in the photo as well.  Howard is also pointing his microphone at the viewer which leaves a very energetic index vector however in this case it is not a negative energy being inflicted.  This photo also has vertical lines leaving excitement and energy to be viewed.  The color that is most visible in this image is blue which makes the viewer relaxed and somewhat tranquil and not spastic.

Ethically this picture fits because he is a radio legend/god and this Zeus-like of a pose represents his dominant and powerful legacy.  The picture imposes his iconic and legendary career will be the best thing to ever hit satellite radio and Sirius will never regret the decision to broadcast him from the sky.  The man is responsible for increasing the number of subscriptions to Sirius from 200,000 to over 6 million plus in a matter of two months of his first Satellite broadcast launch.  For him to pose with such superiority is completely and totally acceptable.

Culturally the ad addresses his fan base which by all means can be its own subculture.  It is relative to our culture because Howard Stern, along with Sirius Satellite Radio, represents freedom of speech which is what America is all about.  Howard Stern and Sirius allow for liberation of the tongue and being able to express yourself as you so desire is something that we value as a culture.

The critical aspect of the image of Howard and the Sirius microphone represents uncensored sound from the sky.  The ad represents what Howard Stern and Sirius is all about being straightforward, entertaining and enjoyable.

After analyzing both of these images I have come to the conclusion that both are effective and aim towards a particular and distinctive audience.  However the more interesting ad with a more intriguing approach is the Howard Stern ad with the matador/Zeus like pose.  There is a lot more too examine and look into with this image versus the XM Hip Hop ad.  Although both images can be construed deeply, I feel that the Sirius ad is more interesting to me because it is more applicable to my enjoyment.

thats questionable Thursday, May 1 2008

I completely disagree with Al Qeada’s coverage of news versus cnn’s international news.  I found that Al qaeda’s news was way too bias to even consider newsworthy.  There information is completely questionable.  I don’t believe that someone can pick up there newspaper and swallow all their bs however I’m sure if i was a citizen of Pakistan I would probably worship this paper….which is why right now im going to kiss the american ground that I walk on.

coverage Thursday, May 1 2008

I chose to read an article about the U.S. attacking al qaeda allies in Somolia.  While reading both the international article and the Al Jazeera article I found both to be very skewed and bias.  In the Al jazeera article it said the U.S. had killed up to 30 including 2 senior leaders of al shabbob.  Meanwhile the international article says that the U.S. killed 10 people and only 1 leader of al shabbob.  In my opinion I feel that the international article gives much more of a news story versus the al jazeera’s version of how they feel.  The international version gives you some sense of background and a more precise documentary of how it happened.  Although I do admire the Al Jazeera’s boldness and straightforward approach; I do not admire their news facts and how they unravel their stories. Al Jazeera does a really good job also on making the US look more like terrorist than Al qaeda.  There is so much spin in the Al Jazeera story that makes us look evil and in their eyes I am sure we already are.

stuntman mike

The character I chose to write about is one of my favorite “bad/evil” guys of all time.  His name is Stuntman Mike.  The movie is Quentin Tarintino’s “Death Proof” from the Grindhouse Double Feature Film.  In the movie Stuntman Mike, played by Kurt Russel, is a deranged man that likes to have fun with his car and see women get brutalized.  Not to say that I condone his actions he is just one bad ass man.

Personal:  My personal reaction to the Stuntman Mikes presence was that at first he seems like a very mysterious laid back guy.  He carries his own swagger and he can talk like a well groomed lobbyist however he is more of a grungy, tough, eerie and straightforward man.  There was something about him as soon as you see his car; there was just an aura of death waiting.  However, little is known about Stuntman Mike, except that he hangs around The Texas Chili Parlor and may or may not have been a professional stuntman on various TV Shows during the 1960s and 1970s. On the surface, he seems like a normal guy, (aside from a large visible scar down the left side of his face) but it turns out that he is in reality a twisted socio-psychopath that enjoys stalking and raping/killing women by way of vehicular homicide

Historical:  Historically Stuntman Mike was created to bring back the old 50/60’s car chase scenes just like the good old days.  The film itself even contained cracked scenes and missing reels to give the movie an effect to make it appear old and crackly (just as in old cinematography.  The movie takes place in this day and age however the clothes Stuntman Mike wears are clothes that a stuntman should wear. i.e. flame retardant jacket.  Stuntman Mike also drives what it looks like to be an old 70’s black Nova which resembles the 70’s muscle car era.

Technical:  This photo was shot at an above angle using fast falloff.  The key directional light looks to be facing the hood of the car with a very bright dome light inside the nova brightening his face.  There is an attached shadow on the hood of the car’s emblem.  There are also street flood lights that cast an attached shadow to the left side of the car.

Ethical, Cultural, Critical:  The ethical aspect of Stuntman Mike is that he has no ethics.  When the viewer watches this movie they realize that this man is just insane and looking for a crazy and wild vehicular homicidal time.  To me it just makes me wish I never see someone like that on the road.  Culturally Stuntman Mike represents the old classic car chase films that involved the use of many classic muscle cars in actions.  Critically this guy is just nuts!  He is very passionate about what he likes to do (drive fast and kill people) but it is very obvious that he is the bad guy in his black muscle “Death Proof” car and that the girls are the bad ass, don’t take no crap innocent good girls.

What I find to be questionable this week is from the film Lawrence of Arabia.  During the film there was a scene that involed Peter O’ Tool giving an arabic man his weapon, a pistol.  I don’t believe any man, in the right state of mind would do such a thing.  Ok I know this is hollywood and I know that in the sixties there was less of a stigma to Arabs (especially pre 9/11) however nobody just hands over a weapon like that!  Also I don’t believe that arabs get excited when they see guns as the man did in the film.  Some may be intriqued however I don’t believe that weaponary stimulates all arabs.  Anyways, nobnody just hands over a gun like that Peter…get the memo.

thats questionable Wednesday, Apr 23 2008

This week what I find questionable is evil is always deemed as bad and wretched.  The reason why I say this is because what is evil to someone else may not be evil to another person.  For example I’ll use Robin Hood.  Robin Hood was a great, courageous man who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.  Now stealing can be viewed as a sin and/or evil; but what if it was stealing to benefit the needy? Would that still be deemed as evil?  King Richard seemed to consider Robin Hood a man of evil and treachery however the people of the poor viewed him as a hero.  What I’m getting to is that if one person thinks something is evil there are others who don’t.

arab feminimity Wednesday, Apr 16 2008

The picture I chose came from a human rights website found here. arab woman

Personal:  My personal reaction to this photo is that it reminds me of Madonna ‘s “En Vogue.”  I understand the concept and meaning of this picture however when I first glanced at it I was reminded of En Vogue or some sort of U2 music video.  When you look deeper into the picture the hands signify that she is being held back in her own country not earning the same slack of freedom Arabic men share.  They are oppressed women with an extreme lack of freedom and very little room to express themselves.

Historical:  Historically this photo is trying to resemble the lack of freedom in their society.  Arabic women cannot really think independently nor interdependently, they just do as they’re told.  I feel that it is much different in our country though.  The Arabic women here are much more liberated.  For example Kid Kardashian, a smoking hot Arabic lady, just graced the cover of playboy a couple of months ago…I wonder how that issue sold in Iran and Armenia…

Technical:  This picture seems to have a diffused light with the general illumination going on.  Slow falloff and the hands create index vectors.  The hands are pointing in various directions and usually pointing brings out some sort of negative energy and for this case the negative energy would be that she is trapped.   The field of view is at an extremely close level just capturing mainly the women’s eyes.

Ethical/cultural/critical: Ethically this photo is precise.  I do not feel that women should be portrayed as an obedient robot however that is how most Arabic women are portrayed and more-so in their society.   It is appropriate for the cultural aspect because it depicts how the Arabic women feel about the way they are treated by their own countrymen/women.

What I find questionable this week is a discussion we talked about in a past class about video web linking us students from UNR to the Students in Egypt.  I find that doing such a project would be very interesting however I do not know how fesible this would be to accomplish considering time zones as well as understanding of each other.  I hate math however math is supposedly the one thing that is universal.  The english language is not universal, nor is our dennotation and even connotation of things.  I am not saying that this is an impossible and irrattional idea, I just believe that it would be rather difficult yet interesting at the same time.

iViva Los Bio-Dome! Thursday, Apr 10 2008

The movie I chose to analyze was probably the most cheesy movie ever; Bio Dome.  Although it may be a cornball movie it is still one of my favorites because it is the zeitgeist of my grade school years.  The scene I chose is in the middle where Bud and Doyle play rock  paper scissors in order to win the pillows and blankets.

Personal:  The first time I saw this scene when I was probably in 4th or 5th grade I thought it was hilarious!  It also became a part of my own little shtick as a kid/teen and every time I’d play rock paper scissors and win I would always say “choo loose the pillow! Choo loose the blanket! Hahahaha.”  It is a very immature thing now that you look back at it in retrospect however it was just about having fun.

Historical:  Historically this scene doesn’t have too much relevance too anything except for immaturity and stupidity.  It does however involve the use of rock paper scissors and everybody knows about rock paper scissors!  In order to win something that is up for grabs you must unanimously win in a battle of rock paper scissors.  Just as Squirrelly (Bud) and Stub (Doyle) did in that specific scene, kids are currently doing the same thing probably to see who gets to be first player on xbox or something.

Technical:  The lighting during this scene comes from an overhead flood light.  The composition and depth of angle is filmed straightforwardly at the characters with them about 5 feet away from camera leaving plenty of headspace as well.  There is no panning involved, the camera is set up on a tripod.

Ethical, Cultural, Critical:

The ethical standpoint during this scene is that you play fair and honestly.  If you win you win, if you lose you lose.  As in this case, Doyle lost and Bud won so Bud got to sleep with blankets and pillows whereas Doyle did not.  Culturally we all know this game.  I am unsure whether or not this tedious game is played overseas in different countries however I undoubtedly know that it is a game that our society and culture participates in, especially as adolescents.  The critical meaning of this cheesy scene is blatant and straightforward as I said earlier; you either win or lose in childhood game rock paper scissors and for the record rocks are overrated.

that’s questionable 6 Wednesday, Mar 12 2008

What I find questionable this week was the link between hip hop and Native American culture.  I understand that both societies hold the same type of repression however how do Indians in any way represent ‘Gangster rap?”  Maybe I just didn’t understand the whole concept when our speaker for Thursdays class came in and showed the rap video on the big screen.  Was she trying to say that Native Americans have resorted to having great relevance to the black community or hip hop community?  If so I don’t think that hip hop stars relate themselves to Native Americans…
